Whether you’re keen to tick off a few of Scotland’s ‘Big Five’ (red deer, red squirrel, otter, golden eagle and seal*), you’re an avid bird-watcher or you just like to wander and see what appears, Grantown-on-Spey and its surroundings have so much to offer in wildlife spotting opportunities. It’s also an area rich in heritage – take some time while you’re here to learn about the history and cultural traditions of Highland life. Here are some suggestions for ways to explore and learn.

* Sadly there’s not much chance of a seal around Grantown-on-Spey, but the other four are very possible!

Enjoy a guided full or half day out in the Cairngorms or beyond with Speyside Wildlife, our established locally-based wildlife experience operator. Your wildlife guide will lead you to the best locations using their expert knowledge, to give you the best chance of achieving your wildlife spotting ambitions. Whether you prefer forest, river, shore or mountaintops, Speyside Wildlife has an option to suit you.

After you return from your expedition, you’ll be feeling pretty peckish. There are several excellent dining options around The Square in Grantown-on-Spey. An authentic Indian dining experience can be found at the Sylhet Brasserie, or head to Po Pia for freshly prepared Thai food. The Garth Hotel  is also an excellent option for a delicious meal concluded with a fireside dram of Speyside malt.

If your appetite for wildlife remains unsatiated, there are a couple of great evening options! Book an evening mammal watching session in Speyside Wildlife’s wildlife watching hide, for the chance to spot badgers, pine martens and more.  Or sit back, relax and learn indoors at one of The Grant Arms Hotel’s popular Evening Wildlife Talks.
