For a book lover, what could be more pleasurable and relaxing than spending some time browsing the shelves of Grantown-on-Spey’s public library and marvellous independent bookshop?

Our beloved library resides within the old Court House on The Square. There are quite a few regular activities available for visitors to join – weekly, pre-bookable Bookbug sessions for tiny tots and their carers; a monthly Book Group open to everyone, for sharing and recommending what people are reading; and from January 2022, a regular Lego Club for older kids – as well as other great ad hoc events throughout the year. There are also two public PCs available to use, and free wifi available for everyone. And shelves of lovely books to browse! Check out the library’s active Facebook page for up-to-date information when planning your visit.

A stroll further down the High Street will take you to one of the best independent bookshops you could find anywhere – in our opinion! The Bookmark is owned and run by book lover extraordinaire Marjory Marshall. There is a remarkable range of stock squeezed into very limited shelf space, spanning all kinds of genres including local and Scottish interest, fiction, crime & thrillers, biography, cookery and much more. The fabulous children’s section at the back of the is well worth a browse with young ones. Marjory supports local book groups and also runs events throughout the year, including author talks and discussions, and the annual Wee Crime Festival.

After all those books, it’s time to raise your eyes and stretch your legs! Access the Grantown Health Woodland from the car park by Grantown Medical Centre, where there are several interconnecting paths, one of which is low level, and the others more undulating. A section of around 250 metres has been surfaced, while the remaining tracks are currently slightly less accessible, requiring stout shoes and good balance. With a wetland in development, beautiful foliage, wildflowers, and an opportunity to spot some local wildlife, a stroll around this community woodland provides the perfect revival.
