Grantown-on-Spey has a wonderful situation next to the River Spey, with several other towns and villages nearby that are well worth a visit. Walk, cycle, drive or take advantage of the local bus service to explore the neighbouring communities and see more of what our beautiful strath has to offer!

Grantown-on-Spey to Nethy Bridge

An easy six-mile walk (or cycle) on reasonable terrain along the Speyside Way, this lovely route from Grantown-on-Spey south to Nethy Bridge (‘The Forest Village’) provides an excellent sense of the local landscape and farmland. In contrast to other woodland hikes in and around Grantown-on-Spey, this one offers a fantastic opportunity to enjoy the big Highland sky above you. There are several gates to open or close along the way – please leave them as you find them.

If you time your walk/cycle well, you’ll be able to watch the steam train arrive or depart from Broomhill Station, just outside Nethy Bridge. The Strathspey Steam Railway runs along a ten-mile restored section of the original Highland Railway Line, and has been running since 1978.

You’ll be needing some sustenance after your morning exertions, which you’ll find in spades at the Nethy House Café. A firm favourite with locals and visitors, the cafe provides a reliably delicious selection of soups, sandwiches, pasties, daily specials and home-baking. Enjoy eating in the comfortable, friendly cafe or on its outdoor balcony, or grab a takeaway to enjoy at a picnic table by the River Nethy or over in the park and playing fields.

If you don’t fancy walking/cycling back the way you came, you can take a Stagecoach bus back to Grantown-on-Spey from the bus stop opposite the Nethy Spar shop. While you’re waiting for the bus, why not pop into Nethy Bridge Community Centre and learn a little more about The Forest Village? Or check out the fabulous range of produce and gifts available in the famous Balliefurth Farm Shop – it’s a real gem!
